How did global movements reach Finland 150 years ago? How did these movements influence the emergence of the Finnish and Swedish-speaking labor movements in the early 20th century? From the politics of patrons to the politics of citizens: the early stages of the local labor movement. Matias Kaihovirta, Title of Docent, Åbo Akademi
Worker Cabaret performance explores the events of 1918 in a Finnish industrial town in current-day Raasepori in Uusimaa, as well as the societal development and events of the post-war decades from the perspective of the residents and workers of the Fiskars and Billnäs.
The journey began in Ukraine. Unexpectedly, in August 2022, Ukrainian blacksmith Serhii Polubotko received a beautifully forged cross along with a humanitarian shipment addressed to the Ukrainian army. It was sent to him by his Slovakian blacksmith friend, Daniel Miclos. The cross bore the inscription: For peace and hope for Ukraine.
In response to this, Serhii Polubotko wanted to assemble a museum collection of crosses in memory of the many victims of the war in Ukraine. Under the working title "With Love to Ukraine," a call was made asking blacksmiths around the world to create a steel cross no taller than 500 mm, combined with copper, bronze, or brass. The appeal produced over 200 crosses from 27 countries. For Serhii Polubotko, the theme of the "cross" is clearly related to Christianity. For him, it also signifies intersection, connection, meeting place, vertical and horizontal, cosmos and earth, universal and individual. The simple basic shape of the cross gives artisans unlimited possibilities to play with the material. The exhibition currently features nearly 300 crosses. Crosses have been sent to the exhibition from numerous European countries, South and North America, Australia, and even Russia.
The first exhibition was held in Norway in the summer of 2023, after which it has toured various parts of Europe.
The blacksmith profession is particularly communal. Over the decades, they have formed a close international network. Blacksmiths have regular contact through various events, conferences, and exhibitions, which has resulted in deep friendships over the years.
The message of the exhibition is to show support for Ukraine, which has fallen victim to a senseless attack. Material support is, of course, vital, but the need for solidarity and compassion is also appropriate at this moment, and the hope they contain is a promise for the future.
Civil disobedience – the conscious violation of laws and rules to protest against social injustice – is a core aspect of punk culture. Punk emerged in the 1970s as a reaction to social inequality, political corruption, and consumerism. Punks used civil disobedience to challenge norms: unauthorized demonstrations, direct action (such as squatting in abandoned buildings), and support for various organizations and movements, for example through benefit gigs. This mindset has helped raise awareness of political issues, strengthen grassroots activism, and create alternative communities centered on equality and freedom.
In the joint exhibition by Saine Ensemble and the Punk Museum, civil disobedience is explored and portrayed from the perspective of punks and their actions. From squatted houses to protests and collective creation – with a do-it-yourself attitude.
The CREA-RE project wants to create an international and sustainable network of artists, organizations and festivals, offering more opportunities for personal and professional development to young artists with fewer opportunities (mental and physical disabilities, migratory background, geographical obstacles), awareness and public at local level on the importance of social inclusion and environmental sustainability.
The dance-theatre show is co-produced, with the participation of a transnational team of at least n. 20 artists, among people with disabilities and people with fewer opportunities, through virtual cooperation and n. 4 transnational residences. Action plans are implemented to improve partner festivals in terms of inclusion, marketing, stakeholder engagement and environmental sustainability, and no.1 manual is drawn up with the best practices identified. The co-created and co-produced dance and theater show is effectively filmed and promoted in 4 festivals.
The central theme will be "The strenght of Fragility" seen as a force to emerge from one´s own context of social exclusion.
Respective teams will work with specific target groups:
Ijshaamanka (Italy) will work with with physical and cognitive disabilities. Sala Fenix (Spain) with young migrants or with social problems. The theater-dance performance is co-produced by transnational team of at least 20 people and artists, including people with disabilities and people with fewer opportunities.
The central theme shared by the 4 partners will be the strenght of fragility seen as a forge to emerge from one´s own context of social exclusion.
The fragility of the balance between biodiversity and social inequalities is a crucial issue that requires deep reflection and action. These two aspects are closely interconnected and change in one can have profound implications on the other.
The power of performance art as an agent of global social and cultural change is indisputable and profound.
Performance art has the potential to transform mindsets, promote empathy and solidarity, and inspire positive action for global social and cultural change.
The collaborative piece is implemented in cooperation with Dancing Meteorite Satellite 2024, ALETHEIA FEST ´24 and ONOMA summer exhibition 2024 FRAGILE.
